Golf Facilities

The official golf season at Columbia begins April 1 and ends October 31. Columbia's golf course does not have tee times. All players must report to the matchmaker at the first tee before starting play.

The Front Desk does not accept reservations for the Terrace Room, Columbia Room or Grill Room. These a la carte dining areas operate on a first come, first served basis, as per tradition of the club.

Special Club Features

Established more than 100 years ago, Columbia Country Club is a private, member-owned club located in Chevy Chase, MD, formerly known as Columbia Golf Club. Since it's inception, Columbia Country Club has grown and offers a full range of athletic, social, and recreational facilities. These inlcude an 18-hole championship golf course, Har-Tru tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, a state of the art fitness center, a six lane duckpin bowling center, paddle tennis courts, a seasonal ice skating rink, a child minding center, and more. 

Additionally, the club maintains multiple restaurants, providing a variety of dining experiences for its 1,450 members, as well as host personalized private functions for members and their guests. The essence of Columbia is not defined by the dining rooms or the athletic facilities, but by the tradition, excellence, and camaraderie of the membership that has become known as the Spirit of Columbia.

Annual gross revenues of $18 million with food and beverage sales of $5.5 million. 

Club is open 6 days per week, 12 months per year.

Position Summary

The Operations Director is responsible for all aspects of Club operations including its activities and the relationships between the Club, its committees, Members, guests, employees, community, government and industry. Manages and oversees the Club’s policies as defined by its Board of Governors. Assists in developing operating policies and procedures and assists in directing the work of department managers.  Implements and monitors certain budgets, monitors the quality of the Club’s products and services, and ensures maximum member and guest satisfaction. Secures and protects the Club’s assets including facilities and equipment. Responsible for operation of all aspects of the club in the absence of the General Manager and perform specific tasks as requested by the General Manager or Assistant General Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Responsible for the proper execution of operations within the Family Activities Building including; Pool Reception Desk, Indoor and Outdoor Pools, Fitness Center, Family Activities Building, Bowling Center and Ice Rink
  • Oversees daily club operations.
  • Approves budgets, staffing, general operating procedures and other plans for the, Athletic, Fitness, and Youth Activities departments.  Directs the work of department heads when needed.
  • Assumes the responsibility of monitoring labor costs and operating results, preparations of variance reports, and development of corrective actions when needed.
  • Monitors the budget and directs corrective action procedures as necessary to help assure that budget goals are attained.
  • Assist the General Manager and Assistant General Manager on developing/implementing business plans, operating reports, forecast and budgets.
  • Researches new products and develops an analysis of their costs and benefits.
  • Monitors internal cost control procedures.
  • Plans and coordinates training and professional development programs for himself or herself and other Club personnel.
  • Functions as an administrative link between departments.
  • May serve as a departmental manager in that manager’s absence.
  • Responsible to help maintain a high degree of departmental and employee morale and comradery.
  • Counsels with other managers and employees about employee grievances and complaints; directs correction where possible.
  • Works with department heads to plan professional development programs for applicable staff.
  • Conducts training and other meetings with department staff.
  • Monitors employee dress codes and member dress codes as applicable.
  • Coordinates with the Food and Beverage Departments to warrant smooth operations in their respective areas of supervision.  
  • Monitors safety conditions and employees’ conformance with safety procedures; updates emergency plans and procedures and assures that effective training for these programs is conducted in all departments.
  • Monitors all Standard Operating Procedures, safety and training programs including; CPR/AED, First Aid, and Life Guard Certifications.
  • Maintains contact with Members and helps to assure maximum member satisfaction.
  • Receives and resolves complaints from Club Members, guests and employees.
  • Interacts with members answering questions, solving problems, overseeing services and cleanliness and showing the Club facilities to visitors.
  • Attends management and staff meetings while executing proper lateral and upward communication to assess the Club’s current interests and necessities.
  • Writes committee agendas and coordinates committee meetings with the Chair.
  • Attends Committee Meetings, taking notes to ensure topics discussed are addressed by Club Management.
  • Provides guidance and feedback related to the development and revision of club by-laws and policies; consistently enforces all policies.
  • Helps plan and approve external and internal marketing and sales promotion for the Athletic and Youth Departments.
  • Helps coordinate with House Services, Engineering and Greens for daily and preventative maintenance.
  • Assists in the planning of facility improvements, remodeling, construction and repair, while interacting with applicable Club committees for this purpose.
  • Participates in ongoing and daily facility inspections throughout the club to assure that cleanliness, maintenance, safety and other standards are consistently attained.
  • Reviews all accidents and completes accident reports.
  • May perform clubhouse opening and closing duties, including those related to security.
  • Undertakes special projects requested by the General Manager and Assistant General Manager.
  • When necessary, assists with the implementation and execution of tasks or events related to Food and Beverage departments.

Candidate Qualifications

  • A minimum of four years of experience in the club industry at a highly respected private club with a track record of increased management growth and development.
  • A history of continued professional development.
  • A team player who can work well and interact effectively with many people both inside and outside of Columbia Country Club.
  • Experience in working with youth and developing youth programming.
  • Pronounced “people skills” in dealings with staff and members.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably with a focus on hospitality, sports management or general business. 
  • Relevant or related experience with managing pool operations.  CPO preferred but not required.
  • Experience managing a fitness operation, including; a fitness center, group exercise, and spa services.
  • Experience or exposure to managing a swim team.
  • A strong degree of adaptability and flexibility.
  • Outstanding oral, written and listening skills.
