Club Employee Demographic Assessment Now Available
Last month, CMAA launched the Club Employee Demographic Assessment. This research survey presented with support from The Club Foundation, will provide a baseline and snapshot of the demographics across the club industry. This three-year project will enable your club to benchmark your changing demographics over time.
According to the 2020 US Census, nearly four of 10 Americans identify with a race of ethnic group other than white. This is especially noteworthy for the younger portion of the population (16 & younger) identified as a racial or ethnic minority.
Diversity in the workplace means employing people of different ages, genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds, and education levels.
Please encourage your Chapter members to participate—their information will be confidential. We are asking for only one response per club. Participating in this assessment will allow you to gain insight into your team’s diversity and assist in formulating your own DEI strategy and tactics.
Participation in this assessment will also provide data to help CMAA build education and resources to help clubs recruit and retain diverse talent, making it attractive for everyone to choose to work in clubs.
Thank you in advance for your support of this important initiative!
Featured Chapter Idea Fair
Congratulations to the Metropolitan Chapter who won first place in the 2022 Chapter Idea Fair for their idea in the “Chapter Communications” category. Check out how they increased their social media presence to provide their members with up-to-date events, a platform to network, and the ability to stay involved and take advantage of what their Chapter has to offer.
"Using social media and having a written plan for Chapter communication creates value for the membership and helps your volunteer board and Managing Director do their jobs more efficiently."

Calling All National Committee Volunteers
As a membership organization, CMAA is governed by members to serve members. Standing and At-Conference committees are an important part of CMAA’s leadership structure and vital to its success.
Each fall, CMAA puts out a call for volunteers for Professional/Alumnus members to serve on national committees. CMAA Chapter leaders are a great resource for helping us identify potential applicants and encouraging them to submit the required volunteer service information.
Appointments are made by the incoming CMAA Chairman and designed to achieve balanced member representation from chapters and regions, club types, individual demographics, skill set, and professional experience.
Close to 150 committee openings are anticipated for 2023. National committee service qualifications criteria, additional information, and the service request form are available online. As committee placements and needs vary annually, CMAA cannot guarantee selection of all volunteer applications. Applications to serve are due by December 31, 2022.
Thanks in advance for encouraging your fellow members (or yourself!) to get involved with CMAA in this volunteer capacity. Member guidance and input are critical to the Association’s continued success!
CMAA Theme for 2023
Each year, an annual CMAA theme is introduced to give all CMAA members, Chapters, and National a common goal to work towards for the membership year. The theme for the 2023 membership is “Engage. Enrich. Unite.”
Managing Directors
CMAA members have until December 31 to pay their 2023 National dues without penalty. Please reach out to your members who need to pay their dues, so we don’t lost them!

Advertise Your Fitness/Wellness Jobs on CMAA
CMAA has added a new category under job details in the online job form: Wellness. With Fitness Departments and Wellness areas becoming an integral part of so many clubs, it is important to bring these types of jobs to the forefront. Listings can be anything from entry-level hourly wage positions to Directors and everything in between. Keep CMAA's job boards in mind when looking for all levels of club personnel.

Independent Contractor Feedback Needed
The Department of Labor (DOL) has issued a new proposed regulation to redefine a worker’s status as an employee or independent contractor under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The proposed rule outlines six, stringent economic reality test factors to consider in determining whether an employment relationship exists. Read full details in the Legislative Report.
DOL is accepting public comments on the proposed regulation through November 28, and CMAA is formulating our response. CMAA would like to hear from you in the formulation of our comments. How will these proposed regulations impact your team and operations? Will your current independent contractors be impacted or need to be reclassified? Share your comments by contacting Melissa Low, CAE.

Professional Development
Need Chapter Speakers? Just Ask.
Each year, over 40 percent of the presenters are first-time CMAA presenters. Conference is a great opportunity for chapters to see new speakers that they can invite to chapter educational events. The Professional Development Department is always willing to share feedback on the presenters as well as provide contact information or facilitate an introduction between a chapter and a presenter.

Final Call to Submit Data to the Compensation and Benefits Survey
The 2022 Compensation and Benefits Survey launched last month and all CMAA Professional Members have been invited to participate in the survey. If you have not yet submitted your data, there is still time to do so. The survey is easy to complete and includes customized reporting tools for you and your staff. The study is hosted and maintained by Industry Insights on the CMAA Research Portal.
Participants will receive a complimentary copy of the industry report plus a customized Club Compensation Report, with their club’s compensation figures reported alongside the appropriate industry comparatives. Club Resource Center subscribers who participate in the survey will also receive access to an online portal for interactive industry comparatives.
As an additional benefit of participation, participating clubs will receive a chapter level report if their Chapter has a participation level of at least 10 clubs and a 20 percent Chapter participation rate.
The deadline for participation is Friday, November 11. If you have any questions, please contact Patti Clever at 614-389-2100 ext. 111 or Amilcar Davy, CMAA's Director of Research, at 703-739-9500.

Greater Cleveland Chapter Hosts Great Lakes Regional Conference
The Greater Cleveland Chapter hosted the annual Great Lakes Regional Conference in October with more than 65 attendees from the Cleveland, Pittsburgh, New York, Niagara Student, and Kent State Student Chapters. The education programming included marketing and online presence, DEI training, resilience & mindfulness, executive coaching, young professional panels, and a class with Roy Hall of the Driven Foundation. Along with education, the group enjoyed club tours at various Cleveland-area clubs and several networking and social events and a chance to learn the sport of pickleball. The host clubs were exceptional, and the participants enjoyed the weekend of camaraderie, and everyone is looking forward to the next regional conference.
We want to hear what your Chapter is doing! Recently hold a fundraiser? Exciting event? Share your Chapter good news via email to goodnews@cmaa.org and you could be featured in an upcoming edition!
