Idea Fair
2nd Annual Turkey Trot
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
On a brisk Thanksgiving morning, 325 members laced up their shoes to take on Congressional’s 2nd Annual Turkey Trot. Our youngest participant was 8 months old pushed in a stroller, and our eldest participant was 81 years old. Even with the low temperatures (30 degrees!) every member took their place at the starting line with a smile on their face. While the 5K was underway, the children participated in the 100 Meter Kids Fun Run. For those who yearned for a brisk walk, there was also a 1.5 mile walk mapped out on course. After completing the fun run, the children made a plethora of Thanksgiving Day crafts. When all the racers crossed the finish line, they were greeted by a banquet of healthy snacks, hot chocolate, and Bloody Mary’s. All participants were able to take home a new coveted Congressional Turkey Trot long sleeve shirt.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
After a brainstorming session among the staff of the Fitness Center, the 2017 Turkey Trot was born. Since the idea was sprung, the Turkey Trot has become a widely enjoyed event by members of all ages. Members look forward to tackling the challenging 3.2-mile route along the prestigious golf courses of Congressional every year. The 2018 Turkey Trot was the most attended event for the Congressional Fitness Center has held, doubling the amount of participation from the year prior. With the popularity of the Turkey Trot increasing each year, the Fitness Team looks forward to creating new and exciting events for the participants. As the month of November comes around, the clubhouse fills with excitement as members look forward to registering for the event. Feedback about the event from the membership was obvious the day of the event, but continued to come in the week after the holiday!
