A Matter of Taste: Art & Cocktails
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
One of the favorite programs to come from the shift to online programming is our "A Matter of Taste: Art & Cocktails at the Cosmos Club" zoom programs. Each new monthly virtual exhibition consists of a 20-minute pre-recorded presentation featuring an artwork that adorns the Club and a recommended cocktail to enjoy while viewing. The Art Committee created this series to give members a better understanding and appreciation of the Club’s art collection, allowing members to slow down and learn about the art that is hung in the building that may not be noticed while rushing to enjoy meetings or lunch dates at the Club.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
With the help of Club Librarian Thad Garrett and under the direction of the Art Committee, members choose a particular art piece within the club to present on. For example, the latest program features Major John Wesley Powell, Eleazer Hutchinson Miller’s (CC: 1893-99) pastel and charcoal portrait of the Club’s founder. Each recommended cocktail is a drink popular at the time the artwork was created, inspired by the artwork itself or specially created by the staff to celebrate the piece. Members have fully embraced the ability to learn about the artwork the Club possesses while enjoying a themed drink. The cocktails can be added to take-out meal orders and recipes are provided for members to create their own drinks.
