Board Retreat Benchmarking

How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
The quality of interpersonal relationships and communication within a Board of Directors is key when making difficult decisions affecting a membership body. Every year, this elected group of individuals, tasked with leading the direction of the Club, experiences turnover. In order to maintain continuity and forge meaningful relationships within the group for the next 12 months, our COO, Thomas Preuml, CCM, CCE, invites the Board along with Directors from key areas of management to a two-day retreat. The program offers an opportunity to share meals and enjoy leisure activities together, such as golf and tennis, in a relaxed, beautiful setting with full accommodations provided at the casitas onsite.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
At a retreat, Board members are educated on the inner workings of the club industry on a broad scale, in addition to club-specific expectations, and have a significantly better understanding of their purpose during their time serving afterwards. The relationships forged during this two-day affair provide an invaluable sense of team and mutual respect as the difficult discussions are had in the meetings to follow, setting the stage for meaningful conversations and healthy decision-making.
