Idea Fair
Commemorating Veterans Day
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
Cosmos Club was looking for a meaningful way to commemorate Veterans Day and honor those Club members who served in the military. Now in its second year, this newly created tradition is a gathering of veterans and interested Club members on the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month of the year. Each year, a veteran Club member is chosen as host and he or she leads the program, which includes toasts from 5 different members who have served in the military.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
The event is publicized in our weekly newsletter and monthly Bulletin, and members who we know served are specifically asked to join. The event draws a great crowd and the stories shared are often times emotional and uplifting. The Club provides the forum and champagne for a toast. It is a half hour event and includes a photo of all attendees who are veterans that is published in a follow up Bulletin article. Members who attend have described it as powerful and important.
