Idea Fair
Employee Pōwhiri
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
The idea behind our Employee Pōwhiri (Maori Welcome) was to enhance our existing onboarding experience and induction of new staff to Tara Iti Golf Club.
The idea has enhanced our Club Operations and working environment in the following ways:
- It recognised the importance, of equity, diversity and inclusion. Enhancement of team morale and pride.
- Fosters social interaction between existing staff and new staff at Tara Iti and also within our local community.
- Increased connection and respect for the sacred land, property and people that have been involved in the creation of the club.
- It provided our new recruits a greater understanding of the past, present and future of Tara Iti.
- A unique cultural experience and a great opportunity to learn about (New Zealand’s) native Māori culture.
- A special event for children from the local school to perform at the club and establish a connection with Tara Iti, their neighbour.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
The idea of the Employee Pōwhiri was suggested to management and initiated by two passionate employees. One of which is a respected Māori elder who fully understands the cultural sensitivity surrounding this type of ceremony.
Here at Tara Iti there is a lot of history pertaining to the local iwi (tribe) in relation to the earliest inhabitants of this country.
Cultural protocols had to be followed with much respect to the local tribe Te Uri o Hau and the full process of this ceremony was important.
The ceremony itself aligned with the Club’s guiding principle: We will embody the spirit of Aroha (love), Manaakitanga (hospitality) and Tika (fairness) in everything we do and strive to create a sense of place for Tara Iti and our employees within our wider community.
It received an incredible response from everyone who participated in the event and Tara Iti intends to continue this special tradition well into the future.
It is a privilege to be a part of such a moving ceremony that has a lasting impression on everyone involved.
