Idea Fair

From Bartop to Coaster

How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?

At Chevy Chase Club, we are deeply committed to preserving the rich history and legacy of our over 130-year-old institution. As part of our ongoing renovations to our Clubhouse in early 2024, we made the decision to honor the beloved Tap Room, a member-favorite bar and restaurant space. The centerpiece of the Tap Room—the mahogany bartop—had been in place for over 50 years, witnessing countless memorable moments. Recognizing the significance of this bartop, we chose to salvage it and repurpose the wood into commemorative coasters. These coasters would be used in the newly renovated Tap Room, allowing members to continue to interact with the historic bar in a fresh, yet deeply meaningful and sentimental way.

How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?

The implementation of this idea involved carefully removing the bartop, working with skilled craftsmen to cut and shape the wood into unique, high-quality coasters. Each coaster carries the essence of the club’s history, giving members the chance to rest their glass on the same material that has been at the heart of good times for generations. Since unveiling the coasters, the response from our members has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have expressed appreciation for the thoughtful approach to preserving the club’s heritage while also embracing modern enhancements. The coasters have sparked fond memories and conversations, further deepening the sense of connection that our members feel to the club’s legacy. This initiative has not only enhanced the Tap Room experience but also reinforced our commitment to honoring the past while shaping the future of our club.
