Idea Fair
Get Out and Play
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
The Kansas City Country Club was looking for a way to increase activity and involvement by our juniors. We wanted a program that would reward kids that put forth the effort to play rather than another competition based on skill. Our Get Out and Play initiative has been an effective tool to accomplish this feat.
At the beginning of the summer, we gather all of our junior tennis players and explain the program. We highlight the fact that anyone can win - you just need to "Get Out and Play". It is not based on ability. It is based on commitment and desire to play the game of tennis.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
The juniors fill out a form in the Tennis Shop every time they practice at the Club. At the end of the six week season, the top 12 finishers receive prizes. As we call out the winners in order, they choose what prize they want. The Jumbo Tennis Racket always goes first!
Parents love the program because it motivates their kids to play and rewards them not based on whether they won or lost but on their efforts! Kids love the program because it has given some of the underdog players a chance to be rewarded where they might not be as competitive as some of their peers on the court. We will continue to have our junior tennis players "Get Out and Play" and encourage them to enjoy this wonderful lifelong sport.
