How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
The Tara Iti Golf Club, in partnership with the Shorebirds Trust, proudly manages the Tara Iti property as both an Ecological Sanctuary and a Conservation Research Hub, alongside its role as a world-class golf course. Our mission is to protect this ecologically significant area, which serves as a vital habitat for over 65 endangered and at-risk species, while actively working to restore its rich coastal biodiversity.
Through the creation of a dynamic "living laboratory" where science and education intersect, the Tara Iti Conservation Research Hub and Ecological Sanctuary supports a wide range of field-based studies. This initiative enhances environmental awareness and education for schools, communities, members, families, and learners of all ages. Together, we strive to inspire environmental leadership and foster meaningful, lasting change.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
The idea was implemented through the establishment of a charitable trust by the club's founding members, with a dedicated board of trustees assigned to oversee its initiatives. The Trust empowers conservation efforts by providing funding, technical support, and applying scientific research, while also coordinating activities to maximize impact.
To operationalize the Trust’s initiatives, a shared Conservation Manager position was created between the Club and the Trust, ensuring seamless collaboration and effective on-the-ground implementation. Together, the Trust and the Club develop both short and long-term strategies to enhance protection and restoration efforts, with a focus on maximizing the recovery of shorebirds and coastal biodiversity through strategic partnerships.
Club members' reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, demonstrated by increased donations and enthusiastic support for the annual Charity Golf Tournament. Member families have also begun volunteering their time to actively participate in conservation initiatives, further strengthening the community's commitment to these important efforts.
