Kentucky Derby Pig Races

How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?

At The Ford Field and River Club, we are proud to have a vibrant equestrian community complemented by extensive programming. The addition of pig races to our already popular Kentucky Derby event has been a game-changer. This unique and entertaining activity appeals to all demographics within our club, offering something for everyone—whether or not they have an equestrian interest.

Members and guests alike can join in the excitement by cheering on their favorite pig, supporting a local charity, and enjoying the lively atmosphere of live pig races. This event has quickly become one of the most anticipated and celebrated occasions at The Ford.

Beyond the fun and camaraderie, the event has proven to be an excellent opportunity for prospecting. It showcases the spirited and inclusive nature of our club, leaving a lasting impression on potential members. The memories created during this event are truly unparalleled. After all, who doesn’t love a good pig race?

How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?

Every year, The Ford Field and River Club hosts a lively Kentucky Derby Party featuring great food, delicious mint juleps, a fabulous hat contest, and other traditions that members adore. In 2017, the Club decided to expand the event's appeal by incorporating pig racing—a playful and engaging twist designed to attract all members, not just those with equestrian interests.

The idea was simple yet innovative: after the excitement of the official Kentucky Derby horse race, why not keep the momentum going with our own race—this time, starring pigs? The concept quickly gained traction, and now members eagerly anticipate both the horse race and the hilarity of the pig races that follow.

The event includes three pig races, each featuring five "contestants," and members can sponsor a pig or place wagers for both the Derby and the pig races. A portion of the proceeds goes to meaningful causes, such as supporting the retirement program for our club horses, ensuring they enjoy a peaceful and well-deserved rest. We also contribute to local therapeutic riding academies, creating a positive impact beyond the event itself.

Since 2017, members’ reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. They love the unique mix of tradition, humor, and philanthropy, which has made pig racing a signature highlight of our Kentucky Derby Party and a cherished tradition at the club.
