Idea Fair
Local School Programming
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
The Bay Head Yacht Club partnered with Brick Township Schools to participate in their Work-Based Learning Program. This community-focused initiative provides students with opportunities to develop essential work readiness skills. Students assisted with server side-work such as polishing silverware, refilling condiments, folding napkins, and assembling event supplies and décor. This partnership eased the burden on our remaining staff during a traditionally challenging staffing period while giving students valuable hands-on experience in a professional environment.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
The program began in October, once many seasonal staff had departed, and was successfully integrated into our operations. During the initial weeks, a BHYC employee worked with the students for a few shifts to help them understand each task. Once the students were confident and proficient, they began completing the daily task list under the supervision of their school aides, without requiring BHYC employee oversight. The partnership has been positively received by members, who value engaging with and supporting local students. This program is easily transferable to other clubs seeking to address staffing challenges while fostering meaningful community relationships.
