Play Hooky for Harvey
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
Hurricane Harvey, which came ashore on August 25, 2017, was the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in more than 50 years. Hurricane Irma, which hit Florida roughly two weeks later, was the most intense Atlantic hurricane to strike the United States since Katrina. Miramont’s parent company, The Adam Corporation/Group, operates businesses in the states of Texas and Florida and identified One American Appeal as the charitable organization in which to direct its relief efforts through the “Play Hooky for Harvey” fundraising event. The fundraiser allowed any golfer (not just members) to play at Miramont from October 30 to November 2 for a donation of $125 per player.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
This was a ground-breaking endeavor in many ways because the public had never been invited previously to play Miramont's golf course. The response was sensational, as more than 400 golfers participated in the fundraising event. Thanks to the generosity of Miramont owners Mr. and Mrs. Don and Donna Adam, The Adam Corporation/Group and American Momentum Bank, a check for $153,625 was presented to One America Appeal on November 28. The golf fundraiser raised $53,625. The Adam Corporation/Group and American Momentum Bank originally pledged to match the funds raised through the golf initiative, but Mr. and Mrs. Adam were so impressed by the response of the community that the couple increased the contribution to $100,000. As a result, the fundraiser contributed a total of $153,625 to the fund assisting families in need after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The fundraiser and the check presentation generated significant television, newspaper and radio coverage in the Bryan-College Station communities.
