Sailing into the Summer

How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?

Our “Blessing of the Fleet” is a cherished Memorial Day weekend tradition that celebrates the start of the Rumson Yacht Club’s sailing season while honoring the rich maritime history of fleet blessings. Originating from Mediterranean fishing communities, the Blessing of the Fleet is a centuries-old custom where clergy pray for safe passage, protection, and a bountiful season for seafarers. This tradition has since become a hallmark of yacht clubs worldwide, symbolizing respect for the sea and its challenges. At Rumson Country Club, the event begins with a picturesque boat parade on the Shrewsbury River, setting the stage for the flag-raising ceremony. Marked by the firing of the cannon, the American flag and vibrant decorative flags are raised to full staff, igniting a patriotic spirit among attendees. The formal blessing ceremony, held on our north porch overlooking the river, includes the pledge of allegiance, a moment of silence for departed members, a historical recap of the Yacht Club, a blessing by Rabbi Harry Levin, and patriotic songs sung by the crowd.

How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?

The event is a testament to the club’s commitment to tradition and community spirit, seamlessly blending ceremony and celebration. Members eagerly anticipate this annual gathering, which fosters a sense of unity and pride. The blend of solemnity and festivity resonates deeply, with the heartfelt blessing and patriotic elements serving as a powerful reminder of the day’s significance. The post-ceremony barbecue buffet, featuring delicious fare and a welcoming atmosphere, provides the perfect opportunity for members to connect, share stories, and celebrate the unofficial start of summer. The "Blessing of the Fleet" not only pays homage to the seafaring roots of yacht clubs but also strengthens the bond among our members, making it a signature event that sets Rumson Country Club apart.
