Idea Fair
Staff Group Volunteering
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
This year, the general manager set a goal for management to come up with a few events to get staff to bond outside of work. Staff members were active volunteers at a local soup kitchen called Lunch Break. The staff thought that such a simple idea could be used to not only bring staff together to bond, but also to help those who need assistance in the process.
About Lunch Break
Lunch Break is located in Red Bank, New Jersey. Their mission is to be a caring community and provide food, clothing, life skills and fellowship to those in need in Monmouth County and beyond. At Lunch Break their simple vision is to strive to break the cycle of poverty for those we serve, and guide in our community members in need to self-sufficiency and healthier, more productive lifestyles.
BHYC believes it’s important to stay involved in the community with simple acts such as these. It doesn’t take money or much planning to get the staff involved in experiences like these together while bettering the community. Clubs always have a surplus of used furniture, china and glassware that could benefit someone else in the community.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
In March 2018, BHYC staff took time out of their schedules to volunteer at Lunch Break. The staff started the day by stocking the food pantry and working in the thrift shop putting away donated household items and clothing. The club donated a barbeque lunch for 80 people. The menu included smoked brisket, BBQ turkey, corn bread, green salad and blueberry crisp. After lunch, the team cleaned the kitchen, mopped the floors and vacuumed the dining room and assisted in the closing of the restaurant. BHYC has also donated their old china and a few pieces of used kitchen equipment to the lunch break organization that they plan on using for their formal galas in the future.
