Idea Fair
Woodworking Camp
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
This idea was designed to work on fine motor skills, focus, and a feeling of accomplishment. During this event, we built birdhouses for the beginning of spring. We used screwdrivers, paintbrushes, and rope to complete the birdhouses. The holes were pre-drilled for the kids to keep them safe for them. We also made bird feeders out of pinecones to hang on the bottom of the birdhouse. This event targeted ages 5 – 12 years old. With the kids being in virtual learning for so long this was a great way for them to use their hands and work their brains on a different cognitive level.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
The idea was implemented in the month of March. We promoted this Youth Event to the membership through an eblast and newsletter that goes out to the entire membership. Parents were immediately interested in the program and began to ask more questions about how they would be making the birdhouses.
Parents were amazed that their kids actually built it and the kids were so excited to go home with their birdhouse and bird feeder that they made with their own hands. To this day the parents come in and tell us about the birds they have living in the birdhouse.
