Icon - CD CheckmarkFeatured Strategy: Decline of Student Members

Over the last several years, CMAA has noticed a significant decline in CMAA’s Student Member classification. In an industry that’s all about community and the relationships, it’s disappointing to see our student membership numbers declining every year.

Here at CMAA, we are putting our heads together to find new ways to engage students and show them the value and many benefits of being a CMAA Student Member! In fact, “The Student” is one of the seven identified tenets in CMAA’s newly adapted Strategic Plan. The three areas of focus for the student initiative are: create best-in-class internship programs to boost interest and exposure to clubs; ensure faculty understand contemporary club management practices and club dynamics and are representing the same via core curriculum; and recruit college students to work in the club management industry.

In February at World Conference in Grapevine, TX, a Student Development Task Force meeting was held where discussion centered on ways to improve the student experience within CMAA, including in the classroom, during internships, and post-graduation. CMAA relies on the support of club managers, faculty advisors, and liaison managers to connect with current and prospective student members. As hospitality experts, we all know the power in conversation. Taking some time to visit a Student Chapter or hosting a student event with current and prospective student members at your club could be exactly what our Student Chapters need to grow in this amazing industry!

Additionally, alumni of schools at which CMAA has a Student Chapter should consider reconnecting with their alma maters to see how and where they can offer support. Perhaps it means visiting a Club Management (or other hospitality-related) class, attending a Student Chapter meeting as a guest speaker, or even meeting with school administration to advocate for club management education and the career path. There is a myriad of ways that members can (and should!) support our student community.

Chapters that support Student Chapters should assess their efforts. Ask a few questions: What is working? What isn’t? Where are you seeing success? Where are you seeing challenges? Share your answers with other Chapters and with the team at HQ – the more information we have, the better we can activate CMAA’s strategic student initiatives and inform the efforts of the Student Development Task Force

Chapter Management Resources

All Officers:
Now more than ever, we need each other as we navigate through uncharted territory. Please remind your members that CMAA Connect is a place for you to link up with your fellow club managers and share ideas and best practices. Chapter Presidents and Managing Directors have their own communities as well. You are not in this alone; we are all better together.

Managing Directors: The mid-year dues structure went into effect on April 1. National dues are $250 for a half-year of membership for all new members. Let prospective members know that now is the perfect time to join and experience all that CMAA has to offer!

Career Services Chairman: As the shelter in place orders extend, it is more important than ever to reach out to your chapter members through emails, phone calls, video meetings, etc. Be sure to continue to encourage members to contact CMAA's Coaches, Kevin MacDonald and Shelley MacDougall and set up a one-on-one session through the CMAA Coaching Hotline at 866-822-3481. #CMAAStrong.

The Club Foundation Liaison: The Club Foundation asked two weeks ago for your help in donating PPE (personal protective equipment) to local hospitals and emergency care givers. They are in need and we can help them in their fight. No donation is too small or insignificant.

More information on the #GetUsPPE movement and a searchable list of where you can go to drop off your donations can be found here: https://getusppe.org/give/. If your local medical facility isn’t listed, please contact them about where to drop off these much-needed and life-saving items – or, ask if you can drop your donations off with a healthcare worker you know personally.

During this time of unprecedented hardship and loss, The Club Foundation Board of Governors would like to reassure you that together, we will weather this storm and come back stronger than before.

Communications Chairman: During the current chaos of COVID-19, we ask you to use this hashtag - #CMAAStrong - to share how your Chapter or Club is supporting the greater community. CMAA Chapters and Clubs are supporting their communities in new ways – feeding first responders and medical professionals, friends in the hospitality industry, and more. We’d love to capture all this information for Club Management magazine and other outlets. You can also email summaries and photos for goodnews@cmaa.org

Legislative Chairman: Access our two-page resource that encapsulates everything that you need to know about these two packages, how they apply to operations, what they can take advantage of, and links on how to take advantage of different programs. Please share this resource with your Chapter members. As always, you can find the latest legislative and regulatory information and guidance on CMAA’s Legislative Report.

Membership Chairman: Have you checked out the “Membership Chairman” section on the Chapter Officer Resource Page?

Professional Development Chairman: Many CMAA chapters have turned to webinars to offer educational opportunities during the COVID-19 emergency. Chapters have inquired how to report a webinar since there is not a “webinar” choice on the online reporting form. Please select the “education” option and indicate “Webinar” in the title of the education program.

Research: The 2020 CMAA Finance and Operations Survey is open now until May 15, 2020. CMAA conducts annual surveys to benefit CMAA members and the club industry by providing baseline data for all members who participate. The survey is completed on the Industry Insights platform to ensure confidential and secure data storage and management. New participants can register and past participants can login at www.cmaa-research.org. CMAA is cognizant of how COVID-19 is affecting our clubs and plans to remain flexible regarding this deadline.

Student Chapter Liaison: The year is coming to a close which means it’s time for Student Chapter Elections. Current Student Officers should meet and figure out which positions need to be filled for the next year. Some of our student chapters have come up with some pretty creative ways to execute the election process. Go to CMAA Connect to start chatting with other chapters to see what they’re doing!

Additionally, the Student Chapter President’s Report is due July 1, 2020. Under the current circumstances that we’re in, there are a few other updates for this report. Visit CMAA Connect in the Library for more information and check in with your student chapters to see what help you can provide.

Wine Society Liaison: The CMAA Wine Society has donated $1,000 to the Sonoma County Vintners Foundation Emergency Relief fund, which is currently helping winery and restaurant employees that have been furloughed due to the impact of COVID-19. Keep reading to learn how this fund will assist those in need.
