Start a Student Chapter

Are you or your university interested in starting a Club Management Association of America (CMAA) Student Chapter? We hope so!

The Association’s policy is that Prospective Student Chapters operate like a Chapter in a trial capacity for at least two calendar years before petitioning for an official CMAA charter. This allows ample time to build a strong foundation for a successful and sustainable Student Chapter.

The Prospective Student Chapter period begins on the date CMAA receives the required number of completed and signed student membership applications (minimum of 10), including the annual membership fees. Annual membership fees (dues) for CMAA student members are $25.

Prospective Student Chapter Information

Here is the criteria to get an official CMAA student group started at your school:

  1. Eligibility: An accredited four-year college or university may start a CMAA Student Chapter. Ideally, your school should have a hospitality-focused major/curriculum.
  2. Express Interest: Notify CMAA National Headquarters of your interest in starting a CMAA Student Chapter by filling out this form. CMAA will then create a Prospective Student Chapter for your institution.
  3. Membership Requirements: You need at least 10 CMAA Student members. Students can join CMAA through the join page. Please make sure students select the correct Prospective Student Chapter from the drop-down menu.

Once the above criteria are met, the following benchmarks must be completed during your two-year (at least) Prospective Student Chapter petition period:

  1. Proposed Name and Location: Establish the proposed name and location of the prospective CMAA Student Chapter.
  2. Student Chapter Leaders: Submit the names, addresses, and positions of the proposed Student Chapter leadership, i.e., Faculty Advisor, President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Chair, etc.
  3. Supporting Letters:
    • Submit a supporting letter from the affiliated CMAA Chapter that is geographically responsible for the proposed Student Chapter, including notification of the designated Liaison Manager(s) stating their willingness to assist.
    • Submit a supporting letter from the Dean of the college/university or designated Faculty Advisor.
  4. Constitution & Bylaws: Submit the Constitution & Bylaws for the proposed Student Chapter.

CMAA looks forward to a great relationship with your college/university and showcasing the viable career path for club management professionals. If you have any questions about the policies and processes for forming a CMAA Student Chapter, please direct inquiries to the Manager of Student Development. Thank you!
