Student Chapter Best Practices: Creating a Succession Plan
A strong student chapter ensures leadership transitions smoothly, maintaining momentum year after year. A well-crafted succession plan helps pass the torch from upperclassmen to underclassmen, keeping the chapter active and engaged.
Why It's Important
- Continuity: A succession plan ensures the chapter stays active when seniors graduate.
- Skill Development: Underclassmen gain valuable leadership experience early.
- Engagement: Consistent leadership fosters ongoing member involvement.
- Future Leaders: It builds a strong pipeline of leaders for years to come.
Steps to Create a Succession Plan
- Identify Future Leaders Early: Look for underclassmen who show leadership potential and engagement.
- Create a Mentorship System: Pair seniors with underclassmen, allowing for knowledge sharing and guidance.
- Allow Shadowing Opportunities: Have underclassmen shadow current board members to learn about leadership roles.
- Encourage Committee Involvement: Get underclassmen involved in committees to gain experience before assuming leadership roles.
- Develop a Transition Timeline: Start the transition process at least one semester before graduation to ensure ample training time.
- Document Key Processes: Create a resource library with event plans, responsibilities, and important contacts to guide future leaders.
By establishing a clear plan, your student chapter will continue to thrive, with new leaders ready to take on the next challenge!
John and Andrea Dorman Fund Endowed to Support New Scholarship for The Club Foundation
John Philip Dorman, CCM, and his wife, Andrea Dorman, initiated the John and Andrea Dorman Fund at The Club Foundation, reflecting their shared commitment to give back to the club industry.
John Dorman has been a dedicated member of the Club Management Association of America (CMAA) since joining the association in 1997 and has led the University Club of New York for nearly 30 years. He has served the City of New York Chapter in various capacities, including three years as President of the Board, and has also contributed to the CMAA National Board of Directors, as well as numerous committees and task forces at both the national and local levels.
Andrea Dorman held a deep appreciation for people and community. She participated in many social organizations, both formally and informally. Alongside John, she attended many events for CMAA, the Distinguished Clubs of the World, and the City Athletic Club Managers group and had a strong affiliation with the Culinary Institute of America.
Andrea passed away in March, and her legacy will continue through this Fund and her many other contributions.
Revenue from the funds endowed will be used to fuel the John and Andrea Dorman Scholarship at The Club Foundation. The scholarship supports emerging leaders in the industry by providing financial assistance to attend CMAA’s Business Management Institutes (BMI).
“The addition of the John and Andrea Dorman Scholarship is a vital enhancement to The Club Foundation’s portfolio of scholarships and grants supporting CMAA members. We are deeply grateful to John and Andrea for their forward-thinking generosity,” said Jeff Morgan, FASAE, CAE, President and CEO, Club Management Association of America.
For more information about the scholarship, please visit The Club Foundation website. Individuals can donate directly to support the fund on The Club Foundation’s donation page.

NCA, CMAA Publish Second Edition of Private Club Governance: A Handbook of Principles and Best Practices
The National Club Association (NCA) and Club Management Association of America (CMAA) today released the second edition of their landmark reference, Private Club Governance: A Handbook of Principles and Best Practices. The new edition adds a chapter on the implementation of outstanding governance for private clubs.
Originally released in 2023, the book was written by a joint committee of experts from the associations and designed to be a framework of best practices for clubs at any place on the spectrum of effective governance.
With the new chapter, clubs have a blueprint for improving their governance even further.
“With its new chapter, the second edition of the handbook is an even more invaluable tool for private clubs,” said joint Governance Committee Chair Tim Muessle, CCM, CCE, Chief Operating Officer, The Olympic Club, San Francisco, CA. “Its publication is the result of the work of top experts from private clubs across the US, and a continued partnership between both associations representing those clubs and their boards and professionals.”
The handbook’s second edition contains all the resources of the first in addition to a clear path to more effective governance.
Private Club Governance was developed by a joint committee of experts from both associations in a partnership structured to benefit the entire private club community.

Your Assistance Requested: JWU Undergraduate Research Study Seeks Data on the Impact of Health and Wellness in Private Club Food and Beverage Outlets
CMAA is seeking voluntary participants to complete a survey as part of an undergraduate research study. This study attempts to analyze the importance of health and wellness and menu offerings in a wide variety and types of private clubs.
The study explores the relationships that may exist between health and wellness programming and the food and beverage menu choices being offered to members and employees. The study further examines which food and beverage outlets in the club support healthy choices to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship that may exist between health and wellness programming and menu development in food and beverage in the available areas where they are offered.
