Student & Faculty Chapter Idea Fair

Lunch & Learn

University of Houston Chapter

Entry Details

We started the Lunch and Learn Concept prepandemic, and due to its success, we relaunched it last year. This event was co-sponsored by the Career Services Department and open to all hospitality students.

It serves to demystify the nature of the club industry and operation.

Our speaker panel comprised recent Hilton College graduates currently employed in clubs, who spoke on their collegiate and professional careers, highlighting their love for the club industry.

This has had the biggest impact factor on our operation! Recruitment has been far more effective when we sign students up following this energizing presentation.

For example, in our first L&L, we capped it at 40 students and enrolled 24 active students. It is currently capped at 50 students, and we now have 38 active members.

Implementation

This idea was implemented with the collaboration of Career Services and brainstorming with students. We found that the main reason students enrolled in other organizations was because they understood what they were enrolling in. They never understood that Clubs offer all aspects of hospitality!

On the contrary if they wanted to focus on Food and Beverage, they automatically gravitated to TRACC. If they enjoyed events, they joined NACE. Very linear thinking...

While these organizations offer in-depth specialized expertise, students needed to be educated that they can join clubs and learn about F&B, Events, and even areas they never thought about pursuing in hospitality.

The Chapter's reaction has been ecsatatis! This one event covers all our recruitment efforst needed! We have learned as achapter the importance of working smart, not working hard! Thsi has been very effective.
