Virginia Tech

Entry Details

The Manager-in-Training Panel was designed to address one of the most common questions asked by graduating students: "What is the difference between a manager-in-development program and a specific role?" To provide clarity, we invited two industry professionals who had completed post-graduate development programs to share their insights and experiences. The panel focused on various aspects of MIT programs, including benefits, compensation, budgeting, membership, and creating professional goals. This event offered students, not just graduating members, valuable guidance for when they transition into the private club industry. The panel addressed a critical knowledge gap for graduating students, equipping them with the information needed to make informed decisions about their post-graduate paths. Hosting industry professionals deepened our chapter's relationships and enhanced networking opportunities. By focusing on practical topics such as compensation and benefits, the event reinforced our chapter's commitment to fostering career readiness among members. The event drew significant interest from upperclassmen and graduating students, creating a platform for meaningful discussions. The success of this event showcased our chapter's ability to address relevant industry topics and positions us as a resource for career development within our hospitality program.

Implementation

We first identified that many graduating students were unsure about the different post-graduate opportunities, so we decided on a panel to specifically address the difference between MIT programs and direct-entry roles. We reached out to industry professionals we had connections with and knew they had completed MIT programs and invited them to share their experiences. The diverse backgrounds ensured a comprehensive discussion that addressed multiple perspectives. The panel began with introductions and presentations from the speakers about their experiences. A Q&A session followed, allowing attendees to ask personalized questions and engage directly with the speakers. After the panel, students received a summary of key takeaways and resources from the speakers about MIT programs. Attendees were also encouraged to connect with the panelists for additional guidance. Students expressed gratitude for the clear and detailed explanations of MIT programs. Many noted that the insights provided helped them feel more confident about their post-graduate jobs. The event encouraged students to start planning their career paths more proactively sparking conversations about internships, networking, and long-term aspirations.
