Student & Faculty Chapter Idea Fair

Shadow a Club Pro Days

Winner

Johnson & Wales University Student Chapter

Entry Details

This idea is not yet in place, but our student chapter is eager to make it a reality. We believe a job shadowing experience would be an invaluable opportunity for students to gain real-world exposure to private club management.

A job shadowing experience offers students valuable real-world exposure to private club management. By observing their assigned club manager or professional, students will attend meetings, observe operations, and participate in member relations, gaining insights into event planning, budgeting, marketing, and the use of technology in club management. In-person shadowing may also include facility tours, such as golf courses and kitchens, offering a comprehensive view of the club’s operations.

This experience allows students to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application. It helps clarify career interests, build professional networks, and develop key soft skills like communication and leadership. Additionally, students gain a deeper understanding of the industry’s dynamics and increase their career readiness, making them more confident and prepared for future opportunities in private club management.

Implementation

The idea behind this initiative stems from the growing interest among students to explore the private club industry in greater depth. While we have previously facilitated club tours and hosted guest speakers on campus, many students have expressed a desire for more practical, hands-on experience. Despite these efforts, a significant number of students still lack direct exposure to the day-to-day operations of a private club, leaving them uncertain about whether this career path aligns with their aspirations.

By offering more immersive, real-world experiences, like job shadowing,  we can provide students with the opportunity to observe the inner workings of a private club firsthand. This will allow them to gain valuable insights into the management, operations, member relations, and event planning that are central to the industry. Many students are eager to determine if a career in private club management is the right fit for them, and hands-on experience is an essential step in making that informed decision.
